Nepal Customs Department regulates import duties and taxes at all entry points including Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), the main gateway for international travelers. Understanding customs duty rates, baggage allowances, and tax calculation methods helps avoid surprises and ensures smooth customs clearance. All passengers must declare items exceeding duty-free allowances and pay applicable customs duty, excise duty, and VAT.

Customs: 5% + VAT: 13%
💻 Laptops & Computers

Customs: 15% + VAT: 13%

How Customs Duty Calculation Works

  • Step 1: Declared Value - Declare the actual purchase value of items in NPR equivalent. Customs may verify with invoices or receipts.
  • Step 2: Apply Customs Duty - Customs duty rate (5%-30% depending on item) is applied to the declared value for taxable items.
  • Step 3: Add Excise Duty - For certain items like alcohol, TV, and luxury goods, excise duty is calculated on value + customs duty.
  • Step 4: Calculate VAT - 13% VAT is applied on the total of declared value + customs duty + excise duty.

Duty-Free Baggage Allowance Rules

  • Personal Use Items: One smartphone, one laptop, one camera are duty-free if for personal use
  • Gold: Up to 50 grams of gold ornaments duty-free for all passengers
  • Alcohol: One liter bottle of liquor duty-free per passenger above 18 years
  • Returning Workers: Nepalis working abroad for 1+ year get additional allowances (TV, appliances)
  • Used Items: Personal used items in baggage generally exempt if genuinely for personal use

Tips for Smooth Customs Clearance

  • Keep all purchase receipts and invoices handy for verification at customs counter
  • Fill customs declaration form accurately - false declaration can lead to penalties
  • Register smartphones in Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) within 2 days of arrival
