About Nepali Panchang

Panchang (पञ्चाङ्ग) is the Hindu astronomical calendar system that provides essential information for determining auspicious times (muhurat) for religious ceremonies, festivals, marriages, and other important life events. The word 'Panchang' means 'five limbs' referring to its five key elements that track celestial movements and their influence on earthly activities.

Five Elements of Panchang

  • Tithi (Lunar Day) - 30 lunar phases in each month, divided into Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) and Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight). Important for determining festival dates.
  • Var (Weekday) - The seven days of the week, each ruled by a planetary deity. Certain days are considered more auspicious for specific activities.
  • Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion) - 27 constellations through which the moon passes. Each nakshatra has unique characteristics affecting muhurat calculations.
  • Yoga - 27 yogas based on the combined longitude of the Sun and Moon. Determines auspiciousness of specific time periods.
  • Karana - Half of a Tithi. There are 11 karanas that repeat in a specific sequence, affecting daily activities.

Why Use Panchang?

  • Religious Ceremonies - Determine the right muhurat for puja, havan, yagya, and other sacred rituals
  • Wedding Planning - Find the most auspicious dates and times for marriage ceremonies and engagements
  • Festival Dates - Know exact dates for Dashain, Tihar, Teej, Janai Purnima, and other Hindu festivals
  • Business & Travel - Choose favorable times for starting businesses, signing contracts, and long journeys
  • Personal Milestones - Select auspicious dates for housewarming (Griha Pravesh), naming ceremonies, and sacred thread ceremonies

Important Tithis in Hindu Calendar

  • Ekadashi (11th day) - Sacred fasting day occurring twice each month. Devoted to Lord Vishnu and spiritual practices.
  • Purnima (Full Moon) - Auspicious for charity, pilgrimage, and religious observances. Many festivals occur on Purnima.
  • Amavasya (New Moon) - Day for honoring ancestors (Shraddha) and spiritual introspection. Not generally auspicious for new beginnings.
  • Chaturthi (4th day) - Sacred to Lord Ganesha. Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most important Hindu festivals.
  • Pradosh (13th day) - Evening worship of Lord Shiva is particularly auspicious during Pradosh time.

Data Accuracy & Source

Our Panchang is calculated based on authoritative Hindu astronomical almanac (Panchanga) tables following traditional Vedic astrology principles. The Tithi, Nakshatra, and festival dates are computed using precise mathematical formulas that have been validated for centuries. While we strive for maximum accuracy, for critical religious ceremonies and weddings, we recommend consulting with a local Pandit or Jyotish (astrologer) who can provide personalized muhurat based on your specific location and birth charts.

Data Source: Traditional Panchanga calculations based on Surya Siddhanta and other authoritative Vedic astronomical texts. Festival dates verified against official Nepal government holiday calendar.
