The rate tables are not loaded yet
Vehicle tax is set province by province in each province’s Finance Act and revised every year. We publish a band only once somebody has checked it against that act, so this calculator stays empty rather than showing you a figure taken from a summary of a summary. Until then, the bands and penalties are listed on your province’s transport office notices.
What makes up the bill
- Vehicle tax (सवारी कर). Set by your province, banded by engine capacity in cc — or by motor power in kW for an electric vehicle, which has no displacement to band on.
- Road maintenance. Charged alongside the tax where the province lists it separately.
- Renewal fee. The bluebook renewal charge itself.
- Late penalty (जरिवाना). A percentage of the vehicle tax that steps up the longer past the deadline you are. It is added to the tax, not instead of it.
Third-party insurance is renewed at the same time and is normally required before the office will process anything, but it is priced by your insurer rather than the province, so it is not in the figures above.
Why the rate differs by province
Vehicle tax is a provincial tax under the constitution, so each of the seven provinces sets its own bands in its own Finance Act, passed with the annual budget. The same 150cc motorcycle is not taxed the same in Bagmati and in Karnali, and the bands are usually revised each fiscal year — which is why a figure from a two-year-old article is worth nothing at the counter.
